Paul Raymond Pigg, 77, of Cape Girardeau, MO, is at peace after enduring years of pain. He left his pain on earth as he ended his fight on Friday, February 3, 2023, he was at home with loved ones at his side.
Paul was a hardworking man, stubborn as an ox and tough as nails. He fought his brave 23-year battle with prostate cancer with every ounce of him. He continued to fight until his last breath. Life was not always easy, but that made him fight even harder.
He was born on Friday, July 13, 1945, in New Madrid, Mo, son of Jack and Estell (Stewart) Pigg. Paul was one of eight children.
Paul was previously married to Beverly Hulst (Hughes) and through this union he created an heir and a spare when Michael and Rachel Pigg were born.
He entered the U.S. Navy in 1967 after High School and was assigned as a medical assistant and corpsman. Paul served with valor in Vietnam and was wounded not once but twice. His wounds resulted in months of hospitalization. He was awarded the Purple Heart with Gold Star, as well as the Presidential Unit Citation, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Gold Star, Vietnam Service Medal with Bronze Star, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. Paul was a proud patriot.
Paul worked for General Motors and retired after 30 years in the St. Louis and Wentzville plants. He was a proud member of the United Auto Workers Union. He was also a general contractor on the side. He liked to start a lot of projects and then “get a round tuit” to finish them. He loved to help people. He never knew a stranger and would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it.
Paul met and fell in love with a feisty red head named Ellen Marie (Creech) and they were married in High Ridge, Mo on Dec 26, 1989. Through this union Paul gained two stepsons and three stepdaughters, and numerous grandchildren and a lot of “round tuits”.
He and Ellen moved to Florida for several years where he became involved in numerous clubs and activities, including the Eagles, Elks, VFW organizations as well as the Veterans Auxiliary 84 in Ormond Beach, Florida. Paul was also an avid collector of coins and many other things. If you were selling or giving it away, he would collect it. He loved to watch old John Wayne movies and any Elvis shows.
Paul loved to fish, garden, and care for his rose bush. Paul was not always sunshine and roses, but if you knew him and were loved by him, he would usually take good care of you and he would eventually call or see you when he got “a round tuit”. He loved his bible, and some would even call him “preacher Paul” as he could quote scripture by memory.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Ellen, three brothers, one sister, three grandchildren, stepdaughter, and a step granddaughter.
He is survived by his children; Michael (Stacey) Pigg of Blackwell, MO, Rachel (Dan) Kuecker of Rapid City, SD; one sister, Carolyn Altom of Sikeston, MO; two brothers, Donald Stewart (Paula) of Texas and Leonard Pigg of Cape Girardeau, MO. His five grandchildren, Cassie, Tristan, Eathan, Samuel, and Joseph. His seven great-grandchildren and four stepchildren as well as nieces, nephews, and his loving dog Lala.
Services will be held at Hutchings-Pendergrass Funeral Chapel in Marble Hill, MO. Visitation will be from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM. Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 PM. Rev. Bill McCormick will officiate. Burial will be in Grassy Friendship Cemetery to join “his Ellen”.
