Roy Dwayne “Waynie” Hanners, age 75, of Scopus, MO passed away peacefully on November 30, 2025, at Southeast Hospital in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Born on July 7, 1950, in Cape Girardeau, MO to the late Roy Andrew and Verna Mae (Cook) Hanners.
On January 21, 1972, Wayne married the love of his life, Sandra Kay (Cook) Hanners, in Jackson, Missouri who remained faithfully by his side through every chapter of life. Sandra lovingly called him “Doll” a name that perfectly reflected the bond, tenderness, and devotion they shared. He is also survived by his uncles, Oda “Odie” Cook and Raymond Cook; his cousin, Mary Ann Crites; and numerous cherished friends who became like family to him. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Wayne spent his entire life rooted in the community he loved so dearly. A lifelong resident of Bollinger County, Wayne was known for his unwavering work ethic, his dependable spirit, and his genuine love for people. For 25 years, he and Sandra owned and operated Sandy and Wayne’s Hutch, creating a place where customers felt more like neighbors. He later spent 25 years working for the Jackson R-2 School District, where his kindness left a lasting impression on students and staff alike. For 14 years, he drove the Stonebridge Senior Living bus, brightening the days of residents with his humor and care. Wayne also spent 13½ meaningful years working with and caring for Alan and Lorene McDowell, a role he embraced with the compassion that defined him.
Wayne truly loved to work, but even more, he loved taking care of others. Whether through a job, a friendship, or a simple act of kindness, he gave from the heart until he was no longer able. He passed from this life surrounded by his devoted wife and a circle of great friends.
Throughout his life, Wayne attended Hahn Chapel Church, Hurricane Fork Church, and Lutesville General Baptist Church, where he found fellowship and faith that carried him through the years.
