Stephen Baker Obituary

Stephen Lynn Baker of Marble Hill, passed away at his home surrounded by his loved ones, on December 1, 2023, at the age of 70. He was born on August 17, 1953, in Cape Girardeau, MO, to the late Darrel and M. Elizabeth (Ward) Baker.

Stephen was a 1971 graduate of Woodland High School. After high school, he pursued a degree in AG Business, that he achieved in 1973, from Three Rivers College. After college, he went to work for his dad at Shell Feed and Supply in Marble Hill. He drove a semi, spread fertilizer and made feed during his days at the feed store. When the feed store closed, he went to work for Ferrell Gas driving a truck. Although his love for the feed store was great, he later found out that the job that would carry him through his future was at Proctor and Gamble. From December of 1984 to 2018, he was employed at P&G for 33 years, prior to retiring. His career also took him to Italy for a period of his life. The road trips to work with his friends were a huge part of his life. Many laughs, smiles and singing of the Statler Brothers was always a given in the car rides. It has been said that a person who loves their job, never works a day in their life and Stephen loved his time at P&G.

On February 19, 1972, Stephen and Glenda Foster were united in marriage at the Church of God in Marble Hill. From Stephen’s senior year of high school, until his passing, he was fortunate to spend his life with his sweetheart. 51 years of marriage brought them a house full of love, and two boys: Stephen and Derek.

He liked to work on the family farm, piddle around fixing things and working on trucks and tractors. When his health got bad enough that he couldn’t get outside and work, he started “Papaw’s Daycare”, watching his grandkids. His grandchildren meant the world to him, and he spent as much time with them as he could. If you were ever caught behind him driving down the road, the action of Stephen smoking his cigar looked much like an eighteen-wheeler shifting gears. You would see a puff of smoke out the window, and a little way up the road see another puff.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Glenda Baker; one son: Derek (Helena) Baker of Glen Allen, MO; one brother: Allen (Linda) Baker of Marble Hill, MO; two sisters: Vickie (Joe) Seiler of Leopold, MO, Teresa VanGennip of Marble Hill, MO; three grandchildren: Wyatt, Amber and Elizabeth Baker; and numerous friends and relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son: Stephen D. Baker; two brothers: Dennis and Eddie Baker; and one sister: Wanda Crowell.

Pallbearers will be Wyatt Baker, Derek Baker, David Foster, Larry Whitticre, Darren Baker and Alex VanGennip. Honorary pallbearers will be Carmen Foster and Amber Baker.

Services will be held at the Hutchings-Pendergrass Funeral Chapel in Marble Hill, MO. Visitation will be held on Monday evening, December 4, 2023, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, December 5, 2023, at 11:00 AM, with Pastor Mike Sowers officiating. Burial will follow at the Baker Cemetery near Marble Hill, Missouri.
